Description

For early Ford Broncos, the NV3550 transmission is a great option for a transmission swap. It is a 5-speed transmission that can handle high torque ratings due to the lower vehicle weight, making strength not an issue. The NV3550 is also similar in weight and size to the stock 3-speed and 4-speed transmissions, making it an ideal fit. The kit includes everything needed for installation, including a transfer case adapter, Dana 20 shifter bracket (T-shifter only), Ford bellhousing to NV3550 adapter plate, clutch disc, full crossmember with rubber support, and transmission shifter handle.

If you are unfamiliar with Bronco transmissions, it may be helpful to know that early Broncos were usually equipped with a 6-cylinder or V8 engine up to a 3-speed transmission. Vehicles equipped with a V8 had a 9-3/8″ tailhousing, which set the bellhousing further into the engine compartment, while vehicles with a 6-cylinder had a 6-1/2″ tailhousing. In 1973, Ford began offering the C4 automatic, but Ford no longer makes the C4 adapter. The Bronco Dana 20 transfer case is another important component to consider when installing the NV3550 transmission. The transfer case has an input gear of 6 spline and a 2.46:1 low gear ratio. The transfer case also has two different shifter designs known as either the “J” pattern or “T” handle. The “T” handle shifter is a simple shifting mechanism and is recommended for those who want to retain the stock location of the shifter. However, for those with a “J” pattern shifter, it may be necessary to change the transfer case shifter rods or contact a Bronco specialty shop for a twin stick replacement.

Finally, it is worth noting that the Bronco Dana 20 transfer case has some weaknesses, particularly in the output shaft. With the increase of horsepower and the reduction of gears, more stress and strain is put on the transfer case output shaft. To address this issue, a heavy-duty output shaft is available for the Bronco Dana 20 transfer case. Overall, the NV3550 transmission is a great option for those looking to upgrade their Bronco’s transmission. It is important to consider all the components involved in the installation, including the transfer case and shifter design, and to make any necessary modifications to ensure the best fit and performance.

PACKAGE INCLUDES: FORD 302 TO JEEP NV3550, JEEP TRANS X BRONCO DANA 20, SQUARE STYLE NV3550 SHFT HANDLE, NV3550 TO BRONCO CROSSMEMBER.
